Engineered boards have a thin timber layer on a plywood base, which limits how often they can be sanded. Engineered can suit underfloor heating better, so check with your heating installer before choosing solid timber over a heated floor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eHow hard-wearing is it?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRed beech has a Janka side hardness of 5.4 kN and silver beech 4.5 kN. Like any timber floor, it can scuff or dent under furniture legs and pet claws; felt pads help, and a solid floor can be sanded back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWill it move or gap?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSolid timber moves a little with the seasons, so fine gaps in dry months are normal.
