The Heirloom Choice: Why Your Next Lounger Should Be Plastic-Free and NZ-Made
Posted on
In a world dominated by disposable "fast furniture," choosing a piece for your home has become an act of philosophy. At Innate Furniture, we believe the objects you live with should do more than just fill a room - they should tell a story, respect the earth, and get better with every passing year.
This is the thinking behind our Heritage Leather Collection. By moving away from mass-produced "perfect" synthetics and embracing the rugged reality of the New Zealand landscape, we’ve created a new standard for unstructured architectural seating.

1. The Beauty of "Character" Leather
Most corporate manufacturers sand, buff, and coat their leather in heavy plastic to achieve a uniform, artificial look. We reject that waste.
Our Heritage Hides are sourced from Tasman Tanning on the banks of the Whanganui River—the only end-to-end leather processor left in Aotearoa. We celebrate the "Character Grade": the subtle growth lines, natural etchings from Matagouri bushes, and unique grain variations that prove the animal lived a free-roaming life on rugged Kiwi pastures. These are not flaws; they are the "one-of-one" signatures of nature that honor the full life of the animal.

2. Beyond Polystyrene: Your Choice of Sustainable Fill
The standard lounging experience is often defined by the squeak and rapid flattening of petrochemical polystyrene. We have replaced that with two world-class, biodegradable alternatives designed for lasting comfort:
-
100% NZ Wool Fill: The gold standard of natural luxury. Wool is a breathable, thermally regulated fiber that provides a dense, silent, and mattress-like support. It is naturally fire-resistant and offers a level of comfort that synthetics cannot replicate.
-
EcoBeans™: Our proprietary, plant-based, and compostable alternative to traditional beans. EcoBeans provide that classic, adaptable "sink-in" feel but with far greater longevity and significantly less settling over time compared to standard polystyrene.
Both options allow us to offer a completely plastic-free product, from the artisan leather shell to the interior.

3. An Investment in Local Craftsmanship
You may notice our Leather Loungers sit at a different price point than standard fabric alternatives. This reflects a commitment to true value over low cost.
A lower price often masks hidden costs—unethical labour, poor-quality bonded leathers, or non-sustainable practices. By pricing our Heritage Collection as a serious investment, we are honouring the true cost of local Christchurch artisanship and the high environmental standards of NZ-tanned leather. When you invest in a Heritage Lounger, you aren't buying a temporary accessory; you are acquiring an heirloom that develops a buttery patina over a lifetime of use.
4. Caring for a Living Product
Because our leather is finished with natural beeswax and oils, it is "alive".
-
The Healing Touch: Scratches aren't permanent. Because our leather has a "pull-up" effect, you can often "heal" surface marks simply by rubbing them briskly with your thumb to generate heat and redistribute the natural oils.
-
The Patina Evolution: Your lounger may feel slightly waxy or "tacky" when it first arrives. This is the high concentration of natural beeswax protecting the hide. As you use it, your body heat buffs this wax into the fibres, transforming the texture into a smooth, custom finish unique to your home.
5. Crafted for Aotearoa
Every piece we make is a product of nature, science, and craft. Handsewn in Christchurch and backed by our Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee, our loungers are built to endure. It is imperfect, and that is its perfection.
