Outdoor Dining Tables: Timber Warmth or Porcelain Practicality
Posted on
Outdoor dining tables need a different kind of honesty. They have to look good, but they also have to deal with sun, rain, food, wind, salt air in some locations, and the normal mess of people actually using them.
At Innate, we make outdoor tables in Christchurch for decks, courtyards, patios, hospitality areas and covered outdoor spaces. The main choice is usually simple: do you want the warmth of timber, or the low-maintenance practicality of porcelain?
The real outdoor table question
Most customers start with the look. That matters, but the better question is how the table will live: fully exposed or covered, coastal or inland, family use or hospitality turnover, casual BBQs or daily dining.
That context usually tells us whether timber or porcelain is the better first direction before we get into size, shape and base style.
Timber if you want warmth
Outdoor timber brings texture, grain and a softer natural feel. It suits customers who like material character and are realistic about cleaning and maintenance.
Porcelain if you want easier care
Porcelain is the practical option for easy wiping, regular meals, hospitality settings and exposed areas where timber finish maintenance would be more demanding.
Timber outdoor tables: warm, natural, not care-free
Outdoor timber has a look and feel porcelain cannot copy. It brings warmth, grain and a human-made quality to an outdoor space. It can work beautifully on sheltered patios and covered outdoor areas, and it can be made for more exposed settings when the maintenance expectations are clear.
Timber outside is not maintenance-free. It should be cleaned and maintained, and exposed sites will ask more of the finish than covered courtyards. If you want timber, the question is not “will it need care?” — it is whether the feel of timber is worth that care for your space.
Porcelain outdoor tables: low-maintenance and practical
Porcelain is often the better choice when easy day-to-day care is high on the list. It is a strong low-maintenance surface for outdoor dining because it handles everyday spills, cleaning and sun exposure well.
Low-maintenance does not mean no maintenance. The frame, edges and detailing still need normal care, especially in coastal, dusty or high-use environments.

Which outdoor table suits your space?
| Priority | Usually points toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest day-to-day maintenance | Porcelain | Easy surface for food, drinks and regular cleaning. |
| Natural warmth and grain | Timber | Better if you want the table to feel connected to timber craft and natural material character. |
| Fully exposed outdoor area | Often porcelain | Less finish maintenance than timber in harsher exposure. |
| Covered patio or sheltered courtyard | Timber or porcelain | Both can work; the choice is more about feel, use and care preference. |
| Hospitality or heavy use | Usually porcelain | Useful where spills, cleaning and turnover are constant. |
Before we quote an outdoor table
The useful details are practical:
- Is the table fully exposed, partly covered or under a roof?
- Is the site coastal, windy, damp, dusty or high sun?
- How many people should it seat most days?
- Will chairs, benches or stools need to tuck in?
- Is low maintenance more important than the natural feel of timber?
Size, shape and base still matter outside
Outdoor areas often look larger than they are. Once chairs, sliding doors, BBQs, planters and walkways are included, the table size becomes more important.
- Long decks often suit rectangular tables.
- Square courtyards can work well with round tables.
- Narrow spaces may need slimmer widths or softer corners.
- Windy sites need sensible weight, stable bases and the right material choice.
If you are unsure, send photos and rough measurements. We can usually narrow the size before quoting. For indoor sizing logic that still helps outside, see our Dining Table Size Guide for NZ Homes and tabletop shape guide.
Made to order in Christchurch
Our outdoor tables can be made to suit the space, including size, top material and steel finish. For larger homes, hospitality fit-outs or shared outdoor areas, we can also discuss matching pieces such as bar leaners, coffee tables, benches or stools. Outdoor dining table FAQs
Is timber outdoor furniture care-free?
No. Outdoor timber is a natural material and needs normal care and maintenance, especially in exposed or high-use settings.
Is porcelain better for outdoor dining tables?
Porcelain is often better if low maintenance is the priority. It is a practical surface for outdoor eating, spills and cleaning, but the frame and detailing still need normal care.
Can outdoor tables be customised?
Yes. Many Innate outdoor tables can be customised by size, top material and steel finish. Ask us if your space needs a specific size or layout.
Do chairs come with the outdoor tables?
Do not assume chairs are included. Product pages show what is included for each listing, and we can advise on matching pieces if needed.
