Why Freight Matters for Custom Furniture

Why Freight Matters for Custom Furniture

Posted on June 12, 2025

For a custom furniture business, delivery is not an afterthought. A table can be beautifully made in the workshop and still be let down if it is moved badly, delayed without communication, or treated like a disposable box.

That is why our freight partners matter. We use Mainfreight for a lot of our national logistics because the way a piece travels is part of the finished customer experience.

Why freight matters for custom furniture

Most Innate pieces are heavy, awkward, valuable and made for a specific room. They cannot be treated like small ecommerce parcels.

Good delivery means planning around:

  • the size and weight of the piece,
  • how it is protected in transit,
  • where it is going in New Zealand,
  • access at the destination,
  • and whether the customer needs help beyond kerbside delivery.

That is especially important for dining tables, boardroom tables, benches and commercial fit-outs.

Why Mainfreight fits our way of working

Mainfreight is a New Zealand-founded logistics company with a long-term operating culture. Their public sustainability material talks about a 100-year vision, investment in people and communities, and practical work to reduce the environmental impact of freight.

For Innate, the fit is practical as much as philosophical: we need a freight partner with national reach, careful handling, and systems that can support large custom pieces across New Zealand.

What sustainability can and cannot mean in freight

Freight is never impact-free. Trucks, depots, packaging and long-distance transport all have a footprint. The honest question is whether the system is being managed carefully and improved over time.

Mainfreight’s sustainability reporting points to work across emissions measurement, rail capacity, electric and lower-emission vehicles, electric forklifts, solar, water systems and waste reduction. Those details matter more than vague green claims.

We do not pretend a freight provider makes a table “zero impact”. We do think it matters to work with a partner that measures its operations and keeps improving them.

How this affects your order

When you order a custom Innate piece, we confirm the best freight option for the item, destination and timing. For some projects that may be Mainfreight. For others, especially local work, we may use a different delivery approach that better suits the job.

The goal is the same either way: get the piece to you safely, with clear communication and the right level of care.
