Dining table guide

Choosing a dining table for your home

A good dining table needs to fit the room, the people around it and the way the home is used. At Innate, each dining table is made to order in our Christchurch workshop, so the starting design can be adjusted by size, shape, timber, colour and finish rather than forcing the room to fit a standard table.

Size and everyday use

Start with the space around the table, not just the size of the top. Leave enough room for chairs to move comfortably, especially in open-plan kitchens and dining rooms where people walk past the table every day. If you are choosing between sizes, we can help work through the room dimensions before you order.

Round, oval or rectangular dining tables

Round dining tables can soften smaller dining spaces and make conversation easy. Oval dining tables give a similar sense of movement while still offering more length. Rectangular dining tables remain the most flexible choice for larger rooms, family gatherings and long open-plan spaces.

Solid timber, colour and finish

Timber choice changes the feel of the table as much as the shape. West Coast Beech, Rimu and Tōtara each bring a different grain, tone and character. If you are comparing options, timber samples are the safest way to see how the colour and finish work with your flooring, light and existing furniture.

Steel base or timber base

Steel bases can keep a table visually lighter and make it easier to customise the span, shape and stance. Timber bases bring a warmer, more traditional feel and can suit homes where the base is part of the feature. The right choice usually comes down to the room, the top size and the look you want to live with every day.

Made in Christchurch, delivered NZ-wide

Our dining tables are made in Christchurch and delivered around New Zealand. For Auckland, Wanaka, Queenstown and other locations outside Canterbury, freight is worked through before order confirmation so the table can be made and delivered with the right handling for its size and finish.

Need a custom dining table?

If you have a room size, seating goal or timber preference in mind, send us the details and we can recommend a starting design. Most people begin with one of the table styles above, then adjust the dimensions, timber, colour and base to suit the space.

Tabletop shapes

Most tables are rectangular, but we can make yours almost any shape. Here are a few common starting points.

Rectangle tabletop shape

Rectangle

Straight sides and softened corners. The most flexible starting point for everyday family seating, and usually the simplest shape to keep the starting price down.

Round tabletop shape

Round

A true circle. Best when conversation and equal seating matter more than long-table capacity.

Pebble tabletop shape

Pebble

An asymmetric organic outline with no hard corners. Good for softer rooms and informal spaces.

Danish Oval tabletop shape

Danish Oval

A tapered oval with a lighter, more refined edge than a standard oval.

Pill tabletop shape

Pill

Straight sides with rounded ends. Keeps useful length while softening the corners.

Table size guide

Choose a shape, then enter either your table size or how many people you want to seat.

A starting point only. Chair width, room layout and walking space around the table all affect the final size. All sizes and shapes are fully customisable.

Timber and colour

Browse our most common timber species and colours. If you'd like your table made using a different species or in a different colour, just let us know!

Northland Tōtara

Honey and reddish tones with fine grain and gentle natural variation.

West Coast Rimu

Warm golden colour with flowing grain and richer character.

West Coast Beech

Warm red-brown tones with flowing grain, darker streaks and natural character.

A rough direction is enough — we’ll help narrow the size, timber, shape and base.

A rough note is plenty. Size, seating, timber, shape, room feel, or a table you’ve seen — whatever you’ve got.

We’ll read it and come back with sensible next steps.

Dining table FAQs

These are the questions we usually help narrow down after you enquire. Read what’s useful, skip the rest.

Can you make a table to our size?

Yes. We make dining tables to order, so the length, width and height can be adjusted to suit your room, chairs and everyday use.

Which timber can we choose?

Our core New Zealand timbers are West Coast Beech, West Coast Rimu and Northland Tōtara. Timber samples are the easiest way to compare colour, grain and finish before you decide.

Do you make West Coast Rimu dining tables?

Yes. Our Rimu is cyclone-salvaged West Coast Rimu, chosen for its warm colour, natural variation and New Zealand character.

Do you deliver outside Christchurch?

Yes. We make our dining tables in Christchurch and deliver nationwide.

How long should we allow?

Current dining-table lead time is 6 weeks. If you have a deadline, let us know early and we’ll tell you what is realistic.

Which shape will suit our room?

Rectangular tables are practical for most homes and larger gatherings. Round tables suit conversation and compact spaces. Oval tables soften the room while still giving generous seating. If you are unsure, send us your room dimensions and we can help.

Are the tables solid timber?

Yes. Our dining tables are made from solid timber, not veneer. The exact timber depends on the design and finish you choose, with common options including West Coast Beech, West Coast Rimu and Northland Tōtara.

Can I choose the timber and colour?

Yes. You can choose the timber species and finish colour. Timber samples are the best way to compare the grain, tone and finish in your own home before confirming the table.

Do you make NZ-made dining tables?

Yes. Our dining tables are made in our Christchurch workshop and delivered throughout New Zealand. We can adjust the size, shape, timber and finish to suit your space.
