Our Purpose

West Coast Red Heart Beech decking in a sunlit outdoor living space

NZ Beech Decking: A Local Alternative to Kwila

Posted on September 19, 2025

Kwila has been the default hardwood decking choice in many New Zealand homes for a long time. It is hard, familiar and widely available. But it is also imported, often sold under mixed supply chains, and can release dark tannins that stain pale concrete, paving and exterior surfaces.

For homeowners, architects and builders who want a local timber option, West Coast Red Heart Beech decking is worth a serious look. It is a New Zealand native hardwood with warm colour, strong natural character and a shorter, more traceable supply chain.

Looking at decking options? Start with the practical questions: where the timber comes from, how it behaves outside, what maintenance it needs, and whether you can see a real sample before committing.

What is NZ beech decking?

Our beech decking is made from West Coast Red Heart Beech, a New Zealand native hardwood selected for its colour variation, grain and character. The timber ranges from honey and golden tones through to deeper reddish-brown heartwood, giving a finished deck a warmer and more natural look than many uniform imported decking products.

It is not a plastic-composite product and it is not care-free. Like any real outdoor timber, it needs correct installation, airflow, drainage, suitable fixings and ongoing care. When specified and maintained properly, it gives you a deck with a genuine local material story rather than another anonymous imported hardwood.

NZ beech decking vs Kwila

Kwila, also known as Merbau, is a tropical hardwood imported into New Zealand. It can be durable and attractive, but buyers should ask harder questions about traceability, tannin bleed and long supply chains. If you want the deeper background, read our guide to the hidden cost of Kwila.

Question Kwila / Merbau West Coast Red Heart Beech
Origin Imported tropical hardwood New Zealand native timber from the West Coast
Traceability Depends heavily on supplier, certification and chain of custody Shorter local supply chain, with provenance easier to discuss and verify
Appearance Usually deep red-brown when fresh Warm honey, red and brown variation with visible native timber character
Bleeding/staining Known for dark tannin bleed, especially when new Still a natural timber, but not chosen for the same heavy red bleed associated with Kwila
Best fit When imported tropical hardwood is acceptable and sourcing is verified When a local, character-rich hardwood with a clearer provenance story matters

Where NZ beech decking works best

Beech decking suits homeowners and designers who want a natural timber deck with warmth, grain variation and a local material story. It can work especially well for:

  • residential decks and outdoor living spaces
  • architectural projects where provenance matters
  • homes using other New Zealand timber inside
  • clients who want an alternative to imported tropical hardwood
  • projects where timber samples and honest maintenance advice are part of the decision

For very exposed coastal sites, commercial wear areas, pool surrounds or unusually wet/shaded decks, talk to us before specifying. The right answer depends on detailing, ventilation, finish, fixing method and how much ongoing maintenance the owner is willing to do.

Maintenance: real timber needs real care

No outdoor timber should be sold as “fit and forget”. NZ beech decking needs regular cleaning and a suitable exterior oil or coating system. How often depends on sun exposure, weather, airflow, shade, foot traffic and the finish you choose.

In practice, most exterior timber decks need a maintenance rhythm: keep leaves and dirt off the surface, clean gently when needed, check fixings and coating wear, and refresh the finish before the timber looks dry or patchy. Good detailing at installation makes this much easier over time.

Sustainability and sourcing

New Zealand native timber harvesting is tightly regulated. MPI sets rules for harvesting and milling indigenous timber, including sustainable forest management permits and plans for eligible private forests. That does not mean every timber product is automatically right for every project, but it does give local native timber a clearer legal framework than many imported hardwood supply chains.

For us, the point is not to pretend beech is magic. It is to choose materials with a story we can stand behind: where they came from, how they were milled, how they perform, and what care they need after installation.

Cost and value

NZ beech decking may not always be the cheapest way to cover square metres. The value is in the combination of material character, local provenance, reduced reliance on imported tropical hardwood and a finished deck that feels connected to New Zealand rather than dropped in from a global commodity chain.

If you are comparing decking purely by the lowest upfront price, beech may not be the right fit. If you are comparing by origin, appearance, traceability and long-term care, it deserves a place on the shortlist.

See the timber before you choose

Timber varies from board to board. That is part of the point. Before choosing NZ beech decking, we recommend looking at real photos, asking about current stock, and seeing a sample if possible.

FAQ: NZ beech decking

Is NZ beech suitable for outdoor decking?

Yes, it can be used for decking when specified, installed and maintained correctly. Suitability depends on site exposure, drainage, ventilation, fixings, finish and ongoing care.

Is NZ beech decking care-free?

No. It is real outdoor timber and needs regular cleaning and finish maintenance. Avoid any decking option that is sold as though it needs no care at all.

How does NZ beech compare with Kwila?

Kwila is an imported tropical hardwood, while West Coast Red Heart Beech is a New Zealand native timber with a shorter local supply chain. Kwila is known for dark tannin bleeding when new; beech offers a different colour, character and provenance story.

Will beech decking change colour outside?

Yes. Like all exterior timber, colour will change with UV, weather, cleaning and coating choices. Regular oiling or finishing helps manage the look, but natural variation and weathering should be expected.

Can I get a sample before choosing?

Ask us what stock and sample options are currently available. Seeing the timber in real light is the best way to judge colour and character.
