Raising the stakes with custom Café tables

Raising the stakes with custom Café tables

Posted on September 25, 2025

Café tables have a harder job than most people notice. They need to look good, fit a tight floor plan, stay steady, clean down easily and survive the rhythm of daily service.

For a hospitality fit-out, the right table is not just a style choice. Size, base design, edge detail, finish and layout all affect how the space feels for customers and how smoothly staff can move through the room.

Start with the floor plan

Before choosing a table size, map the real movement through the space: counter to table, table to door, staff paths, prams, bags, and the awkward corner that always seems to catch a chair. A table that looks modest on paper can feel too large once chairs and service space are included.

Compact two-person tables

600–700 mm round or square tops are useful starting points for small cafés, window seats and flexible corners.

Flexible four-person tables

700–800 mm square or round tops can suit casual dining, shared plates and spaces where tables may be moved or paired.

Communal tables

Long shared tables work well where the brief calls for atmosphere, capacity and a central gathering point.

Outdoor or courtyard settings

Outdoor tables need material choices that suit the exposure and a realistic care plan for the venue.

Base stability matters

A café table is handled all day: bags get hung off chairs, people lean on edges, tables are shifted for groups, and staff clean around them. A stable base, sensible footprint and good floor contact make a big difference.

For tight hospitality layouts, the base also affects where feet and chair legs can go. A good-looking table that customers kick every time they sit down will not feel good in service.

Choose tops for real use

Timber gives warmth and character, while steel bases bring strength and visual lightness. For outdoor hospitality areas, porcelain and steel options can be a lower-maintenance choice than timber, though normal outdoor care and cleaning still apply.

The best choice depends on the setting: indoor café, restaurant, courtyard, bar, winery, lodge or shared commercial space.

Think in repeatable details

Commercial furniture often needs consistency. Matching sizes, repeatable base styles and clear finish choices help the room feel settled rather than pieced together. They also make future additions easier if the venue expands or changes layout.

Café table questions

What size works for a two-person café table?

A 600–700 mm round or square top is a common starting point for two people. The final size depends on chair width, service style and how tight the floor plan is.

Are round or square café tables better?

Round tables are easier to move around in tight spaces and feel softer. Square tables can push together more neatly for flexible seating.

What matters most for commercial café tables?

Base stability, cleanable finishes, edge durability, spacing between tables and the ability to repeat sizes across a fit-out usually matter more than looks alone.

Can café tables be made to custom sizes?

Yes. Innate makes hospitality tables to order in Christchurch, so dimensions, tops, bases and finishes can be matched to the venue and layout.

Planning café or hospitality tables?

Send us the floor plan, rough table count, indoor/outdoor use and any finish preferences. We can help shape the sizes, bases and materials around how the venue will actually work.
