The Heirloom Chair: A New Innate Product Direction

The Heirloom Chair: A New Innate Product Direction

Posted on October 3, 2025

The Heirloom Chair started as a simple question: could we make a chair that fits Innate’s way of working — local materials where possible, repairable thinking, and enough presence to sit beside our tables without feeling like an afterthought?

This is not fast furniture dressed up with a story. It is a product direction we have been testing around steel, timber, leather and natural fill options, with the same bias we bring to our tables: make the decisions visible, and avoid hiding weak materials under a polished surface.

Why make a chair at all?

A dining table is only part of the room. Chairs take the most daily handling: pulled in and out, leaned on, dragged, stacked with bags, sat in by guests, children and tired adults at the end of the day. If the chair is flimsy, the whole setting feels compromised.

For Innate, the opportunity is to design a chair that can carry the same material honesty as our tables: a strong frame, selected surface materials, and components that can be repaired or refreshed rather than treated as disposable.

The material direction

Steel frame

Steel gives the chair a clear structure and the strength needed for everyday use.

Timber detail

Timber can connect the chair visually to the table and bring warmth to the frame.

Leather upholstery

Leather brings character and will change with use, so marks and patina need to be part of the brief rather than treated as failure.

Natural fill thinking

Where possible, natural fill options such as wool are part of the design conversation rather than defaulting straight to synthetic foam.

Designed to be maintained

The best version of this chair is not one that looks perfect for a photo and then becomes difficult to live with. It should be serviceable. Wear areas should be understandable. Upholstery and fill should be able to be discussed honestly before a customer orders.

That is what “heirloom” should mean here: not a vague promise that nothing will ever wear, but a better relationship with wear, repair and long-term use.

Where it fits

The Heirloom Chair is suited to people who already think carefully about their table, materials and room. It can sit around a dining table, in a reading corner, in a lodge, office or hospitality space where the furniture needs to feel considered rather than generic.

As with any new product direction, details matter. If you are interested, talk to us about the current options, materials and lead time rather than assuming every finish or configuration is always available.

Interested in the Heirloom Chair?

Ask us what the current chair options are, how they pair with your table, and what materials make sense for the way the piece will be used.
