Innate’s current rimu dining tables are made from cyclone-salvaged West Coast Rimu, not general recycled rimu stock. That distinction matters. Many people search for “recycled rimu dining table” because they want New Zealand timber with age, warmth and a responsible material story. In our current range, the closer and more accurate description is West Coast Rimu from cyclone-salvaged material. If you have your own recycled rimu, we can still look at it, but we do not want to imply that reclaimed building timber is our standard rimu supply. Quick answer: yes, West Coast Rimu can make an excellent dining table when the boards are sound, dry and suitable for the size and shape of the piece. What we mean by West Coast Rimu When we talk about rimu dining tables now, we mean West Coast Rimu, and where provenance matters, cyclone-salvaged West Coast Rimu. This is not the same as saying every table is made from old house framing, flooring or reclaimed furniture timber. If a customer supplies reclaimed rimu, it depends heavily on the individual boards: their size, previous use, condition, coatings, nail holes and stability. For our standard rimu table enquiries, West Coast Rimu is the clear material language. For supplied timber projects, we assess the actual boards before confirming what is possible. Why rimu works so well for dining tables Rimu has a warm, distinctly New Zealand character. Depending on the board, it can range from honey and golden tones through to deeper reddish-brown colour, with grain movement that gives the table presence without needing an ornate design. That is why it suits dining tables so well. A rimu table can feel grounded and familiar, while still working in a clean modern room when the shape, base, edge profile and finish are kept considered. A round West Coast Rimu table shows how the timber can work beyond a standard rectangular dining table format. Cyclone-salvaged rimu versus customer-supplied reclaimed rimu The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. Cyclone-salvaged West Coast Rimu Rimu recovered from storm-damaged or naturally fallen material under the relevant supply pathway. This is the accurate language for Innate’s current rimu dining-table option. Customer-supplied reclaimed rimu Rimu recovered from a previous use, such as old buildings, furniture, flooring or other structures. We can consider it when a customer supplies the timber, but it is not our standard advertised rimu table supply. Customer-supplied timber If you already have rimu, the first step is to check the board dimensions, condition, coating, fixings and stability before designing around it. The simple version: if you are ordering a new rimu table from Innate, ask about West Coast Rimu. If you already own old rimu boards, send us details and we can tell you whether they look suitable. What to check before ordering a rimu dining table Table size Start with the room, the number of seats and the clearance around the table. The right size is the one that works in daily use, not just the biggest top that fits. Timber character Rimu varies from board to board. A good layout makes the colour and grain variation feel intentional rather than patchy. Shape and base Rectangle, round, oval and pebble-style tops each change how people sit, move and talk around the table. The base needs to suit the shape, chair positions and leg room. Supplied timber If the rimu is yours, board condition matters as much as species. Old nail holes, cracks, coatings or short lengths can change what is realistic. This is where the common “recycled rimu dining table” search can still be relevant: a customer may already have old rimu boards and want them turned into a table. If that is you, send clear photos, rough dimensions and any history you know about the timber. Useful details include: the approximate length, width and thickness of the boards; whether they have nails, screws, paint, glue or old finish on them; where they have been stored; what you would like made; the rough table size you have in mind. We will then advise whether the timber looks suitable for a dining table, better suited to a smaller piece, or not worth building around. Choosing rimu against other New Zealand timbers Rimu is not the only good choice for a custom dining table. At Innate, we also work with New Zealand timbers such as West Coast Beech and Northland Tōtara, depending on the piece and the feel the customer wants. Rimu usually suits people who want warmth, visible character and a strong New Zealand material story. West Coast Beech can feel cleaner and more contemporary. Tōtara has its own softness, warmth and depth. The right choice depends on the room, the table shape, the level of grain movement you like, and the feeling you want from the finished piece. A custom rimu dining table usually starts with the practical decisions: how many people you want to seat, the room size, whether you prefer rectangular, round, pebble or another shape, which base style suits the space, and whether the timber is Innate’s West Coast Rimu or timber supplied by you. From there, the workshop decisions begin: board selection, layout, joinery, base placement, edge detail, sanding and finishing. Those decisions are quiet, but they decide a lot about how the finished table feels. A darker rimu dining table in a clean modern room. Rimu colour can vary noticeably between boards and supply sources. When rimu may not be the right choice Rimu is not automatically the best answer for every table. It may not be right if you want very pale timber, perfectly even colour, or a design that depends on board sizes the material cannot support. If you are supplying old rimu boards, it may also be the wrong fit if they are too short, unstable, heavily coated or damaged in ways that would compromise the finished piece. That does not make rimu difficult. It just means the design and the timber need to have a proper conversation before the table is made.
