What will my floor cost?

Multiply your floor area by the price per m². A 40 m² living area in 85 mm boards is 40 × $139 = $5,560 of flooring, incl GST. Allow separately for freight, laying, sanding and your finish; your installer can quote those.

Natural or Heritage?

Natural has a cleaner, more even look. Heritage has more character: small pinholes, darker markings and more variation between boards. Both are the same price. Not sure? Get a free sample pair and see both in your own light.

Why solid timber, not engineered?

Every board is solid beech right through, so it can be sanded back and refinished many times over its life. Engineered boards have a thin timber layer on a plywood base, which limits how often they can be sanded. Engineered can suit underfloor heating better, so check with your heating installer before choosing solid timber over a heated floor.

How hard-wearing is it?

Red beech has a Janka side hardness of 5.4 kN and silver beech 4.5 kN. Like any timber floor, it can scuff or dent under furniture legs and pet claws; felt pads help, and a solid floor can be sanded back.

Will it move or gap?

Solid timber moves a little with the seasons, so fine gaps in dry months are normal. Your installer should check the moisture of the boards and the subfloor before laying. BRANZ has good guidance on solid timber flooring on a concrete slab.

Kitchens and bathrooms?

Kitchens are fine with a good finish and quick clean-ups. We don't recommend it for wet bathrooms.

How do I finish and look after it?

Install, then sand, then coat. We like natural oils such as Osmo and Natural House Company; your installer can advise on oils, waxes or other finishes. Day to day, sweep or vacuum and wipe with a damp, not wet, mop. Re-oil as the finish maker recommends.

Can it go with an older native floor?

Beech is a New Zealand native timber, and Heritage grade has the warm, varied look many older native floors have. Order a free sample pair to compare it with your floor.
