West Coast Red Heart Beech (Nothofagus spp.) is the premium, ethical alternative to imported rainforest timber. Sourced exclusively from the South Island under world-leading Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) management plans, this is timber with a clear conscience.
While mass-market Kwila floods the country, Red Heart Beech offers the distinct, rich russet warmth of genuine New Zealand heartwood. At $10.50 per linear metre, you are investing in a rare, high-density native timber that tells a story of sustainability and heritage.
🌿 Why Cutting This Tree Saves the Forest
Concerned about native logging? So are we. That’s why our we operate exclusively with Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) practices.
Unlike pine plantations which are clear-felled (leaving a wasteland), CCF mimics nature. We harvest only single, mature trees, leaving the canopy intact. This minimal-impact approach actually accelerates regeneration by allowing light to reach the forest floor, ensuring the forest remains a forest—forever. This is widely regarded as the world's best practice for sustainable indigenous forest management.

⚠️ CRITICAL INSTALLATION PROTOCOLS
West Coast Beech is a premium high-density hardwood. Strict adherence to these protocols is mandatory.
1. The "4-Sides" Rule
You must coat all four sides (face, back, edges) and cut ends with a quality penetrating decking oil prior to installation. Sealing the back prevents uneven moisture uptake, which is the #1 cause of cupping.
2. Stainless Steel Fixings Only
Beech contains natural tannins. Using zinc or galvanized screws will cause permanent black ink-like staining. You must use Stainless Steel (304 or 316 grade) screws.
3. Pre-Drill Every Hole
This is a dense hardwood. Pre-drilling and countersinking is essential to prevent splitting.
4. Ventilation & Spacing (NZS 3604)
Maintain a minimum 5mm gap between boards. Ensure at least 450mm ground clearance with cross-ventilation. Do not fully enclose the sub-deck; the timber needs to breathe.

Innate Furniture Ltd. is not responsible for design, engineering, or installation. It is the sole responsibility of the Purchaser and/or Installer to ensure that the decking is installed in strict accordance with NZS 3604:2011 and our additional installation protocols.
