West Coast Red Heart Beech Decking 90x19mm
$10.50
West Coast Beech decking, 90 x 19mm
West Coast Red Heart Beech decking is a dense NZ native hardwood decking board with a warm red-brown tone and natural variation. It is a local alternative to imported tropical hardwood decking, supplied in a clean 90 x 19mm pencil-round profile.
Price and ordering
- $10.50 per linear metre, incl. GST
- Minimum order: 200 linear metres
- Freight: nationwide freight available, confirmed before dispatch
- Factory oil coating: available for $1.40 per linear metre, incl. GST
Factory oil coating option
This decking is supplied as untreated timber and needs to be oiled on all sides and cut ends before installation. We can supply it raw for your builder or installer to coat on site, or factory-coat it before dispatch with a NZ-made natural exterior oil finish.
Our usual finish for this product is a warm walnut exterior decking and cladding oil from The Natural House Company. Factory oil coating can save significant time on site before the boards are laid.
If you are unsure how many linear metres you need, contact us before ordering and we can help check quantity, finish and freight.

Why choose West Coast Red Heart Beech decking?
This is for projects where a local timber story, visible grain, natural colour variation and traceable supply matter. Red beech heartwood is recognised in NZ timber references as suitable for exterior exposed situations and decking, but it still needs the right project conditions, detailing and maintenance plan.
It is not a fit-and-forget surface. Like any natural timber used outdoors, it needs good preparation, suitable fixings, airflow below the deck, drainage and ongoing care.
Beech decking vs Kwila
If you are comparing Kwila decking, West Coast Beech is a good local option to consider. Kwila is widely used in New Zealand and can perform well outdoors, but buyers should still ask about source, certification, chain of custody, tannin bleed and maintenance expectations.
We prefer West Coast Red Heart Beech for customers who want a durable native hardwood decking option with a shorter, clearer supply chain. You can read more in our guide to what to know before choosing Kwila timber.
| Question | Kwila / Merbau | West Coast Red Heart Beech |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Imported tropical hardwood | New Zealand native timber from the West Coast |
| Traceability | Depends on supplier, certification and chain-of-custody evidence | Shorter local supply chain, easier to discuss and verify |
| Appearance | Usually deep reddish-brown when fresh | Warm honey, red and brown variation with native timber character |
| Tannin staining | Known for dark tannin bleed, especially when new | Still a natural timber, but not chosen for the same heavy red bleed associated with Kwila |
| Best fit | When imported tropical hardwood is acceptable and sourcing is verified | When local provenance, character and a clearer material story matter |
Where it works best

- Projects where local provenance and visible timber character matter
- Homes or architectural projects already using New Zealand timber inside
- Decking projects where samples, finish and maintenance can be considered before ordering
Check with us first for harder sites
Talk to us before ordering for very exposed coastal sites, pool surrounds, heavily shaded or damp decks, commercial high-wear areas, or projects where building-code compliance and treatment requirements need to be confirmed by the designer, builder or installer.

Care and installation notes
This is real outdoor timber, not a maintenance-free product. Oil all sides and cut ends before installation, keep the deck clean, maintain airflow and drainage, and refresh the exterior oil or coating before the surface becomes dry or patchy. Maintenance frequency depends on sun, shade, weather, foot traffic and exposure.
Deck design, compliance and installation are the responsibility of the purchaser, builder or installer. Suitability, treatment requirements and installation should be checked against the relevant NZ building requirements for the project.
